Picturing Women

Fashioning

HOME

Fash' ion, v. To give fashion or shape to, to make, model, construct, fabricate.
To make good-looking, to beautify.
To modify, transform.
To counterfeit.

The Fashioning theme explores how the female body is formed, deformed, and reformed by fashionable dress. Here we look at how a girl's or woman's identity is fashioned by what she is seen wearing (or is it?). We look at images that explore the tradition of the made-up or falsely-fashioned face; and we explore the notion of fashioning as creating, of women as created (generally by a male " other").
