I recommend the book "33 Things All Girls Should Know About American History." A good introduction, but I don't think it goes much in depth into the lives of American women.
Anyone know of a resource that goes in depth, but is still appropriate for middle school students?
Also, any questions you've posed to students that help to get beyond the surface of basic facts?

Depending on the period, they need to ask "why" and "what were the women doing?" Who's present? Who's absent? The same would be true of art exhibitions, texts, and films.
