Picturing Women

Portraiting

HOME

Por' trait, v. To make a portrait,
picture, or image of. To portray.
To represent or describe graphically.
To set forth.
To draw or make.

The Portraiting theme challenges the assumptions we make in looking at individual portraits, and how we read the portraits we see. Is looking for " likeness" (the resemblance between a sitter's most visible characteristics and her portrait image) the most important aspect of understanding a portrait? What else can we be looking for, and what other questions should we be asking?
